In 2015, Hoyt Sullivan was identified by the City of Somerville as a park in need of extensive renovations and upgrades. Working with the City, community, and a modest budget, KMDG developed a plan that incorporates natural materials into a contemporary design– one that increases accessibility and preserves much of the existing tree canopy with the priority of offering a variety of less-conventional experiential play opportunities.  

The new design creates several outdoor play rooms that are intended to provide diverse experiences for children and adults of varying ages and abilities. Overlooking the MBTA Fitchburg line, KMDG seized the opportunity to safely watch passing trains from an overlook platform that cantilevers over an existing wall and slope. Large areas for pre-schoolers and school-aged children are shaded by an existing beech tree and feature age-appropriate climbers and slides. A scootering path moves up and down subtle topography, creating a circuit that intersects with all areas of the park while also providing accessible entrances to those areas as well. A sand and water play area allows younger children the chance to interact and play with natural elements. At the entry of the park, a small plaza area just off the street was designed as a welcoming gateway, with a community table and benches creating an informal picnic and gathering space.
